Artists’ Exchange

March 20, 2024 @ 6pm on Zoom

Art & Healing: Revealing Hushed Histories

Artists’ Exchange is a group created by and for artists to share artwork and a place for a community of artists to share resources and opportunities, and to connect online.

Grab a glass of wine or tea, and let’s talk about art!

Each month host, Pamela Blotner, invites 2 artists to share their work, ideas, and processes. The group will then be invited to join the conversation. This month, she welcomes Na Omi Judy Shintani and Lorraine Bonner, two Bay Area artists whose art draws upon difficult personal and family experiences as a lens to explore universal and historical injustices.

Na Omi Judy Shintani’s art addresses two questions:  What does the past mean to us today?  How does uncovering hidden stories help us shape a future of fairness and inclusion?  Much of her art touches on the imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II.  Her work brings to light memories, repressed emotions, and current feelings about this period in U.S. history.  It also depicts how this historical injustice touched her own family and how it relates to current times.

Lorraine Bonner is both an artist and a physician.  Much of her art focuses on memories of extreme sexual abuse in childhood.  She has used clay to create narratives of victim and perpetrator as well as the larger political dimensions of violent exploitation.  Her art also explores grief and rage, as well as climate change, the disintegration of the biosphere, and the likelihood of human extinction.
