Argon is a self-professed hypochondriac with the profound misfortune to have to be subject to the draconian medical remedies of 17th Century Paris. Exposed to endless enemas, a bevy of the most frightening "scientific theories" of his time and enduring cavalcades of clysters, our protagonist works to arrange a successful (but dubious) marriage for his daughter to a wealthy doctor (with the aim of securing free healthcare for himself), as his family and household staff works teach him sense. All between his treatments, of course!
