Turtle Observer Training

Date:
Saturday, February 9, 2019 - 9:00am to 12:00pm
Location:
Event Description:

Become a trained Turtle Observer and you will monitor and record behavior of the native Western Pond Turtle around Phoenix, Bone Tempe, Alpine and Lagunitas  lakes. Kids have great observation skills, love walking the lake shores and are great advocates for the turtles! MMWD has enlisted the help of volunteers to protect this vulnerable animal by monitoring habitat conditions, recording their behavior, and educating the public during the spring when they are most vulnerable. Volunteers have collected valuable data on native and non-native turtles that  is helping to direct the management of these species. The required orientation includes a hike around Lake Lagunitas, a discussion on turtle biology, and methods for engaging the public. Volunteers will monitor turtles from March through May on their own schedule. Volunteers can be as young as 8 years old if accompanied by an adult. Training will occur Saturday, February 9 from 9:00-noon. RSVP and send any questions to volunteerprogram@marinwater.org
